THE ONE
And where will My resting place be? God wants to find a resting place for His Authority.
Isaiah 11:1…a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him…
In the ‘REST FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT’ in https://joongare.wordpress.com/ we saw how the Holy Spirit identifies rest for His foot. In the Old Testament, the Spirit of God rested on men and women called with a particular task. We have seen Noah given the task to build The Ark to shelter from the two floods. Noah would not have done this without the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to 120 years of obedience. Faith propels man to do those things that have not been seen or heard. Faith is the assurance, title deed, confirmation of things hoped for or divinely guaranteed, and the evidence of things not seen. The conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses. For by this kind of faith the men of old gained divine approval. In Hebrew 11:1-40 see a list of people in the ‘Hall of Faith’.
Isaiah has been prophesying about judgment coming upon Israel as a result of her wickedness. The prophet had just described Assyria cut down like a forest of trees. Likewise, Israel would have only a remnant left after God finished judging her 6:11-13. Now he pictured a shoot sprouting from one of the stumps left after Israel’s harvesting. A shoot would sprout from Jesse’s family tree stump. After a tree has been cut and felled, the stump or tree stump is usually a small remaining portion of the trunk with the roots still in the ground and at the scent of water, a stump will always revive. This is the beauty of prophecy as the birth of Jesus had already been prophesied to come from the line of Jesse. there is no judgment that would have thwarted the birth of Christ for God had you and me in mind.
Assyria would be like a tree cut down at the height of power. Isaiah 10:33, 34, never to rise again. Judah, the royal line of David would be like a tree chopped down to a stump. But from that stump a new shoot would grow – the Messiah. He would be greater than the original tree and would bear much fruit. The Messiah is the fulfillment of God’s promise that a descendant of David would rule forever 2 Samuel 7:16.
Jesus Christ being the central figure in Christianity, the Spirit of God would permanently rest upon Him unlike the Old Testament where the Spirit of God was imparted on men and women with a task. Later in the synagogue, in Jesus firs reading, He quotes Isaiah 61:1, that the Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon Him…Luke 4:18, 19 and He stopped in the middle of verses 61:2 after the words ‘the time of the Lord’s favor has come.’ Rolling the scroll, He said, ‘the scripture you have just heard has been fulfilled this very day! Luke 4:21. So you see, we are under God’s favor or grace if you like.
After the baptism of Jesus as He came out of the water, the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God descended like a Dove and settle on Him. All three persons of the trinity are present and active at this point. The Spirit was with the Lord Jesus throughout His Ministry. After He redeems us from the power of sin and death, we can now come to to Him in repentance and He ushers us to the Kingdom of God. Through believing in our hearts and confessing with our mouth as shown in Romans 10:8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word [the message, the basis] of faith which we preach— 9 because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation…this is what is referred to as being born again or saved. THE SPIRIT ON JESUS CHRIST RESTS ON US AFTER SALVATION.
The evidence of genuine salvation is the presence of the Holy Spirit within the individual, how can this be verified? How can we be reasonably certain about ourselves, as well as others, without being guilty of judging? Romans 8:16 tells us: “The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God.” First and foremost, we have the unshakable testimony from within us! The indwelling Holy Spirit of God constantly reassures us that we belong to Jesus Christ.
Jesus told His disciples that He would ask the Father and He would send them a Helper. This Helper – the Holy Spirit lives in you and me after conversion. God is Spirit and His words are Spirit and they are alive. He sustains us to live a faithful life through His Word. As we confess the word of God, the Holy Spirit within us fulfills these words upon our lives. The Holy Spirit has found REST in the believers lives through Christ Jesus.
